In this chapter a lot changes. The chapter begins during winter in Maycomb County, in fact the coldest winter since 1885. Mr. Avery (one of the Finch's neighbors) told the Finch's that changes in the weather are brought on by mischievous children disobeying their parents. With the cold weather brought unfortunate news to the Radleys; as Mrs. Radley has just died in the cold of that harsh winter. Yet the death of Mrs. Radley does not affect the daily life of Maycomb as she typically stayed to her house. The morning after Mrs. Radley dies the Finch household is woken up by Scout's screams. She sees snow falling down onto the yard and creating a thin layer of snow over Maycomb. Right about then the phone rings and it is announced that there would be no school that day due to the first day of snow since 1885. Later that day after scraping up part of Miss. Maudie's yard and most of the Finch's yard a snowman was born who looks a lot like Mr. Avery. When Atticus sees that it looks like Mr. Avery he gets mad and after slight modifications Atticus, Jem, and Scout are happy with the snowman. In the afternoon and evening the temperature drops again and the snow stops. This leads to having all of the fireplaces lit. Late into the night or early the next morning Atticus shakes Scout awake. The Finch's go outside and find that Miss. Maudie's house has caught fire and the whole neighborhood is trying to move her possesions out of the house. Eventually the Maycomb fire truck arrives and the crew begins spraying water onto the burning building. The last person to leave Miss. Maudie's house is Mr. Avery and he makes it out in the nick of time right before his exit collapsed. The hot smoke and steam progressed across the street and attempt to work away Miss. Rachels, and the Finch's homes. As the heat built up melting the snowman the Abbotsville fire truck arrived and began to cool down the roof of the Finch's house. A few minutes later a third fire truck arrives and puts out the small flame in Miss. Crawfords home. Eventually the three fire trucks leave and everybody goes back to bed. Later that day Maycomb learns that the fire started in Clark's Ferry around sixty miles away. Atticus notices a foreign blanket in Scouts room and after thinking for a while they come to the conclusion that Boo(Arthur) Radley draped it over Scout at the fire. When they talk to Miss. Maudie later they find out that she isnt sad that her house burned down but somewhat cheerful. She was only sad that her azaleas had died.
Setting: The main residential street of Maycomb
Character Profiles: Miss Maudie: She starts off the chapter being depressed about her azaleas having the chance of being frozen but at the end of the chapter is happy because she will now be able to build a smaller house and have a bigger yard despite the fact that her azaleas died of burning.
Scout: This chapter for Scout starts out with her thinking that the world is going to end but once she learns what the snow actually is, she becomes really happy and excited when she finds out there is no school that day. Near the end of the chapter she is scared and very worried when the fire occurs and she is freezing to death yet she is curious when she finds out about the blanket. She also feels sorry for Miss. Maudie and Scout learns a lesson about teamwork and the benifits of having good neighbors over the course of the chapter.
Jem: Jem progresses a lot like Scout over the course of the chapter but did not believe that the snow meant the end of the world. He also learns the lesson and also finds out that he is a good sculptor when he creates the snowman.
Atticus: He is also new to the experience of this chill and snow so he goes along with his children's idea but does not believe that there will be enough snow not even enough for one snowball. He is thoroughly impressed when he sees the snowman but does not like the fact that it looks like Mr. Avery. By the end of the chapter Atticus trusts Jem and Scout a bit more.
